All about Olympics

Even if the Olympics Games’ history is somewhat fragmented, the Games have genuinely returned. The principles that still serve as the foundation of the Olympic Spirit today were evident even in the earliest festivals that the Ancient Greeks planned. Additionally, in Antiquity, competing nations maintained a truce throughout the athletic events; this custom is being followed today, as the Olympic Truce is adopted by the UN General Assembly prior to each Games. The Games have an extraordinarily rich and millennium-long history.

When the Greeks started measuring time in Olympiads, or the interval between Olympic Games, in 776 BC, the first written record of the official Games appeared. In honor of the god Zeus, the first Olympic Games were held every four years. Since then, the Pythian or Delphic Games (a distinct event from the Olympian Games) have included a variety of creative events, including poetry, music, singing, and theater, bridging the gap between culture and athletics from the very start.

Theodosius I, the Roman Emperor, outlawed the Olympic Games in 393 AD on religious grounds, saying they promoted pagan practices. Only in the contemporary period were they brought back to life.
